What is shopify website development & customization?
Shopify development is the work of building and customizing a store on Shopify's platform — themes, Shopify Plus storefronts, checkout extensibility, custom apps and migrations onto Shopify. Coder71 has been a Shopify Partner since 2017 and works on Plus stores every week.
Shopify development is the work of building and customizing a store on Shopify's platform — theme engineering, Shopify Plus storefronts, checkout extensibility, custom apps and migrations onto Shopify from another platform.
We have built on Shopify since 2017 — themes, Shopify Plus storefronts, custom apps, and migrations onto the platform from WooCommerce, Magento, BigCommerce and bespoke systems. It is the platform we recommend most often, which is exactly why it is worth being precise about where it stops being the right answer.
What Shopify development covers
"Shopify developer" describes at least four different jobs, and merchants are often sold one while needing another.
- Theme development. Building or rebuilding the storefront itself — Online Store 2.0 sections, templates, metaobjects, and the merchandising controls your team uses week to week.
- Shopify Plus engineering. Checkout extensibility, Shopify Functions, B2B, Markets, Flow and multi-store setups. This is where the licence fee is earned or wasted.
- Custom app development. Embedded admin apps and storefront extensions, for behaviour no listed app implements the way you need it.
- Migration onto Shopify. Catalogue, customers, orders, content and URLs moved from another platform without losing rankings or order history.
| Capability | Shopify | Shopify Plus |
|---|---|---|
| Checkout customization | Very limited | Checkout UI extensions and Functions |
| Discount and shipping logic | Apps, with the page weight they bring | Server-side Functions, no page weight |
| B2B / wholesale | Apps or a second store | Native company accounts and price lists |
| Multi-market pricing and duty | Basic | Markets, with landed cost handling |
| Storefronts on one account | One | Multiple, with shared administration |
| API rate limits | Standard | Substantially higher |
Shopify Plus, actually used
Most Plus merchants we meet are paying for capabilities they have never switched on, because their agency never got past theme work. Four of them are worth naming, because each one usually replaces an app and a monthly bill.
Checkout extensibility
Checkout UI extensions let you add fields, upsells, delivery instructions and validation to a checkout you previously could not touch — without the script-tag hacks that used to break on every platform update. This is also the migration path off checkout.liquid, which is no longer supported.
Shopify Functions
Discounts, shipping rules, payment method visibility and cart validation running server-side inside Shopify's own pipeline. They cost nothing in page weight, which is why replacing apps with Functions is one of the highest-leverage performance changes available on the platform. On one replatform this took the app count from 41 to 12.
B2B on Shopify
Company accounts, price lists, payment terms and per-location catalogues. Genuinely capable now for a large share of wholesale operations that would previously have needed a custom ordering platform — and considerably cheaper to run when it fits.
Markets and localisation
Per-market pricing, currencies, domains and duty handling. Worth setting up properly: showing landed cost early rather than at the final checkout step is one of the few changes we have measured moving cross-border conversion decisively.
Themes written to be maintained
Liquid is easy to write badly, and the cost arrives eighteen months later when nobody will touch the store. We keep sections small and composable, name things for what they are, avoid the 4,000-line snippet that ends up holding three unrelated features, and leave documentation in the repository.
The test we hold ourselves to is simple: can your next developer — ours or yours — make a change without reading the whole theme first? If a client leaves us, we would rather they leave with something maintainable than with a dependency.
Migrating onto Shopify
Migrations are the highest-risk work on this list, because the damage from a bad one is invisible for weeks. Ours run off a complete URL map with every legacy path preserved or permanently redirected, structured data rebuilt before launch rather than after, and a cutover rehearsed against a clone of production data.
Customers, order history and subscription state come across as well, not just the catalogue — the detail most quotes gloss over and most merchants discover afterwards. Read the Northlane migration case study for how one ran end to end.
When Shopify is not the right answer
We build both, so this recommendation costs us nothing either way. Shopify stops fitting when the rules of the business cannot be expressed in it: weight-based pricing where the invoice is adjusted after picking, delivery slots with capacity, substitution logic, deep multi-vendor payouts, or entitlement models that are closer to licensing than retail.
If two or three of those describe your operation, the honest recommendation is a custom ecommerce build in Next.js, Vue.js, Node.js or Laravel — or a hybrid, with Shopify keeping the storefront and a custom system holding the logic behind it. If only one does, an app or a Function usually resolves it for a fraction of the cost, and we will say so.
Performance on Shopify
Shopify handles the hard infrastructure, which means almost every slow Shopify store is slow for reasons the merchant controls. In practice it is nearly always the same short list: apps injecting render-blocking script on every page including the ones they are not used on, collection templates loading every variant image up front, third-party fonts and chat widgets loaded ahead of content, and image sizes served far larger than they display.
An audit that names which app costs what is worth more than a general recommendation to improve speed, so that is what ours produces — measured against field data rather than a lab score, because the number that matters is the one your actual customers experience on their actual phones.
Who this is for
Merchants already trading on Shopify who have outgrown their theme; brands migrating onto Shopify from WooCommerce, Magento or a bespoke build; Plus merchants who are paying for capabilities nobody has switched on; and in-house teams who need Shopify specialists alongside them rather than instead of them — which is staff augmentation rather than a project.
What it costs, and how long it takes
Both depend on scope, and scope on a Shopify project varies more than people expect: a focused theme rebuild and a Plus migration with a 30,000-SKU catalogue, an ERP integration and eight years of URLs are not the same job. We would rather scope yours than publish an average that fits neither.
Send a paragraph about the store and what is wrong with it. A senior engineer replies with questions, not a brochure, and the free consultation that follows ends in a written scope and a proposal. Talk to our Shopify team.
What you actually get.
Plus capabilities actually switched on
Checkout extensibility, Functions, B2B and Markets, built by engineers who ship them weekly. Most Plus merchants pay for these and use none of them.
Themes you can maintain
Liquid written to be read: small sections, honest names, documentation in the repository. No 4,000-line snippet nobody dares touch after we leave.
Apps replaced with Functions
Server-side discounts, shipping and validation cost nothing in page weight. One replatform went from 41 apps to 12 this way.
Migrations without the drop
Catalogue, customers, orders and URLs moved on a rehearsed cutover with a rollback plan, and redirects mapped before anything goes live.
An honest platform recommendation
We build custom platforms too, so if Shopify is the wrong fit for your model we have no commercial reason not to say so.

Discovery to launch, step by step.
How long it runs depends on your catalogue, integrations and how much has to be migrated. You get a schedule with the proposal, after discovery — not before it.
Audit
We review the theme, the app stack, the catalogue structure and the Plus capabilities you are paying for and not using. You get the findings in writing whether or not you engage us.
Scope
Theme work, Plus engineering, an app or a migration — agreed explicitly, because these are four different jobs. Priced and sequenced before anyone opens an editor.
Build
Development on a duplicate theme or a development store, reviewed in increments rather than revealed at the end. You can open the preview at any point.
Test
Checkout, payments, discounts and shipping proven against real scenarios, on desktop and mobile, before publishing. Including the edge cases your team already knows about.
Publish and support
A rehearsed publish with redirects in place, then defects fixed under warranty and ongoing help from the same engineers. Rollback is planned before it is needed.

What clients say about working with us.
“They rebuilt our checkout in 11 weeks. Conversion rose 38% and it hasn't dipped since.”
Shopify website development & customization — asked and answered.
Yes, since 2017. More usefully, Shopify is a platform we work on every week rather than occasionally — including Plus stores, which is where most of the platform-specific expertise actually lives.
